STEVIE: WE'VE GOT THE WORLD'S BEST
Jimmy Rice 15 March 2009
Steven Gerrard labelled Fernando Torres the world's best striker after our Old Trafford rout - and admitted Liverpool's title challenge had been undermined by the Spaniard's injury woes.
El Nino has featured in just 15 of the Reds' 29 league games this season following a series of hamstring problems.
The Spain international was back to his best as Liverpool beat Manchester United 4-1 on Saturday - and Gerrard knows his fitness is crucial if 2008-09 is to end in glory.
"He is magic," said the Huyton-born star.
"I know I am biased but I don't think anyone will argue with me when I say he is the best striker in the world. If we keep him fit until the end of the season then it'll be an exciting run.
"It's been frustrating not having him out there. I believe if we'd had him fit for more games we'd be closer to, if not ahead of, United." Meanwhile, Gerrard revealed how Liverpool's goal spree in M16 was not simply down to chance.
"They are a good side but we came here to fight and play a bit higher than usual," said the 28-year-old. "So, we had the belief that we could get back in the game after going 1-0 down. We showed great character and got our reward in the end. "It was a wonderful performance and the result was fully deserved."
